East Milos Jeep Safari - Itinerary / Private (1-3 Persons)
East Milos Jeep Safari is perfect for experiencing Milos’s highlights on an intensive full-day tour. Visit the abandoned Sulphur Mines, explore the Volcano of Milos and many more places.
Tour Description:
We will start our Off-Road Adventure from the busy port of Adamas, heading south. Leaving the beautiful gulf, the second largest in the Mediterranean Sea, we will turn before Milos Airport on a dirt route of about 3 km to approach the Kalamos Volcano Crater, inactive for the past 90.000 years.
We will see the fumaroles on the top of Agia Kyriaki hill, called Kalamos. Volcanic gases (Sulphur) escaping into the atmosphere are simply amazing. After our stop and exploration, we will continue to the Sulphur Mines.
Milos was one of the areas where significant amounts of Sulphur were mined. All this developed in the broader Paliorema area of Milos. This area, now deserted, was once an important Sulphur extraction site. Gradually the mining and exploitation of Sulphur developed even more. In particular, around 1860 the concession of the farm to private individuals began, while in 1958 it was abruptly stopped. And this is because Sulphur became a by-product of oil refining, at a particularly low cost. Thus came the end of the Sulphur mines of Milos, which now look like a ghost attraction on the island.
Our route continues to the stunning Aggeria Mine, one of the largest and deepest mines of Bentonite in Europe, passing by the white-washed typical Cycladic architecture Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi.
The next destination will be Kastanas, a totally secluded beach on the north-east coast of Milos Island. It lies in the middle of a fairly isolated area, far from villages and main roads, offering peace and relaxation to visitors. The beach has coarse sand mixed with multicolored pebbles and emerald green waters, and is surrounded by colorful rock formations in various shades of red, orange and purple. The sea bed is rocky and wearing sea shoes would be a good idea. As you can guess, there are no facilities, so you should be equipped with all the basics including plenty of water.
